Greece, located at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa, is a democratic and developed country with an advanced high-income economy, a high quality of life, and a very high standard of living.  It is a country with thousands of islands throughout the Aegean and Ionian seas. Influential in ancient times, it's often called the cradle of Western civilization. Athens, its capital, retains landmarks including the 5th-century B.C. Acropolis citadel with the Parthenon temple. Greece is also known for its beaches, from the black sands of Santorini to the party resorts of Mykonos. 

Greece is a member of numerous international institutions, including the European Union, the Council of Europe and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), and has been part of the Eurozone since 2001. Greece's unique cultural heritage, large tourism industry, prominent shipping sector and geostrategic importance classify it as a middle power.
